Love on the Brain - Book by Ali Hazelwood - Book Review

Ali Hazelwood's Love on the Brain is a charming novel that seems both new and comforting, combining humour, romance, and intellectual charm. Hazelwood returns to an academic setting after the success of her first novel, The Love Hypothesis, and crafts a narrative that is both emotionally and intellectually gratifying.

The protagonist of the book is Bee Königswasser, a driven neuroscientist who recently got her ideal position at NASA overseeing an innovative research project. As she learns to adapt to her new profession, Bee's life is a tornado of excitement and hardships. However, when she starts working with the tough and sometimes irrational Levi Ward—a brilliant scientist with whom she shares a convoluted past—things take an unexpected turn. The romantic tension in the book is fuelled by their tumultuous relationship, which combines personal attraction with professional rivalry.

Hazelwood writes with such joy—her funny dialogue and astute observations are delightful. Bee's inner monologue is especially interesting since it captures the difficulties of striking a balance between personal and professional goals with an authentic and accessible voice. Electric conversation between Bee and Levi demonstrates Hazelwood's talent for developing character chemistry. Their exchanges are funny and a little vulnerable, which adds to the intriguing and poignant nature of their developing friendship.

The story takes on a fascinating new dimension with the backdrop of NASA and the scientific community. Although never going overboard with the reader, Hazelwood's attention to detail in capturing the technical aspects of Bee's work is commendable. The author clearly loves science, and this excitement comes through in the writing, adding depth and a unique perspective to the story.

The story does, however, adhere to numerous well-known romantic comedy clichés, such as the romance at the office and the "enemies-to-lovers" dynamic. Some readers may find these themes predictable, despite the expertise and grace with which they are handled. However, Hazelwood's narrative focused on the characters and the sincere love shared by Bee and Levi elevate the ordinary to a delightfully unusual experience.

All things considered, Love on the Brain is a fun book that blends romantic adventures with cerebral stimulation. It's evidence of Hazelwood's skill at creating likeable characters and clever language that delves into topics of self-discovery, profession, and love. This novel provides a delightful getaway into a world where science and love collide, regardless of your interest in STEM fields or your preference for well-written romances.
