Hoover contributes to a strain of popular romance that places emotional repair and complicated family bonds alongside the love story, rather than treating romance as an escape from difficult circumstances.

The novel works best when it lets Kenna's isolation accumulate. Her letters to Scotty give the grief a private form, while the alternating perspectives create a useful tension between what Kenna knows and what the people around her believe about her. The emotional pacing is strong because forgiveness is delayed rather than handed over immediately. The difficulty is that the book sometimes pushes its characters towards emotional conclusions faster than their circumstances justify.

The final movement is affecting but too neatly arranged. The story wants its redemption to feel earned, yet several developments arrive with the convenience of narrative mercy.
