The Passion Within: A Woman's Journal

I wanted a clean white background for this book. Simple. Minimal. Elegant. Naturally, it took far longer than expected. By the time everything finally looked right, I realized the photo had become part of the reading experience. It matched The Passion Within: A Woman's Journal almost perfectly. Quiet on the surface. More thoughtful than it first appears. And yes, I was irrationally happy with how aesthetic it turned out.

Joanie Garborg's The Passion Within: A Woman's Journal is less a book to race through than a companion for reflection. Part of the Promise Journals collection, it combines themed Bible verses, inspirational quotations, and generous writing space, encouraging readers to engage personally with ideas about faith, purpose, and spiritual growth rather than simply reading about them. Its appeal has largely come from that blend of devotional reading and journaling, especially for readers looking to build a regular habit of reflection.

This is where my usual reading instincts failed me.

I kept waiting for a plot.

The book politely handed me a blank page instead.

Fair enough.

Garborg understands that sometimes the most important part of a book is the space it leaves behind. The journal prompts and Scriptures are designed to slow the reader down, which is surprisingly difficult in an age where even relaxing has become something we try to optimize. It is not trying to overwhelm you with new ideas. It is trying to make sure you actually sit with the ones you already have.

Its biggest challenge is also its biggest strength. Readers looking for a traditional devotional with extended teaching may find themselves wishing there were more commentary. This journal assumes you are willing to do part of the work yourself. That makes it deeply personal for some people and a little too open-ended for others.

Then comes the dramatic pause.

I straightened the book.

Again.

The white background was off by approximately three millimeters.

Nobody would have noticed.

Except me.

There is something refreshing about a book that values quiet consistency over dramatic transformation. Instead of promising a completely new life by chapter three, The Passion Within gently invites you to return, write a little, pray a little, and notice what changes over time. That restraint feels genuine. It trusts the reader enough not to fill every silence with advice.

If you enjoy books that ask you to participate instead of simply turning pages, this one quietly earns its place on the shelf.

And if you happen to spend fifteen minutes lining up the perfect white background for the photo...

I'd say the book would approve of your patience. Even if your camera roll doesn't.
